5. Niko Bellic

The smartest thing the minds over at Rockstar have ever done - other than creating GTA online and basically earning the licence to print money - is giving each game in the franchise its own distinct identity. This allowed them to essentially tell whatever story they wanted and have no real restrictions set in place.

Since the early days of the PS2, Dan and Sam Houser haven't missed with each entry in the franchise. This in part has to come down to the characters they, along with the rest of the team, have crafted throughout the series. That being said, not everyone was satisfied with the tale of Niko Bellic.

Niko was a very different protagonist compared to the ones that came before him and Rockstar was clearly trying to take GTA in more of a serious direction. One that probably won’t be visited any time soon.

Few characters return for future games anyway, and thanks to the fallout over payment between Niko’s voice actor, Josh Feinman and Rockstar it is guaranteed we’ll never see Niko again.
