10 Video Game Choices That Seem Important (But Are Actually POINTLESS)
1. But Thou Must - Dragon Quest
If you were to look for the origin of pointless choices in games, the best candidate would probably be the original Dragon Quest. Although there might have been other titles that included pointless choices before it, Dragon Quest 1 did it so memorably that it's still referenced and talked about to this day.
In the final dungeon of the game, when you finally rescue princess Gwaelin from the dragon, she will ask you if you're ready to bring her back to the king.
You get the classic "yes or no" screen, but before you start thinking this is some last-minute secret ending where you give up being the hero, think again. If you pick no, the princess will completely ignore your loud and clear proclamation and tell you, "But thou must."
From that point, you can keep answering with no to turn the dialogue into an average argument between two five-year-olds, or say yes and do what you're meant to do.
It honestly would be a pretty funny moment if it weren't for the fact this one pointless choice gave way to hundreds of clones that use it as an excuse to force players into doing exactly what the game wants.
