10 Video Game Clichés That We Secretly Love

7. You Are The Chosen One

The Chosen One is one of the most common cliches in all of entertainment media, whereby the protagonist eventually learns that they're the single, special person who can vanquish the villain, save the day, and bring balance to the universe.

It's a rather groan-worthy trope in movies in particular, yet far easier to swallow in video games because, per the medium's interactive nature, we as players get to live out the power fantasy ourselves.

The Chose One is such a widespread a narrative device because it allows writers to organically unveil the world to both the player and the protagonist at the same time, rather than having to awkwardly thrust exposition upon the player that the main character already knows.

And seeing a character grow from humble origins to a glorified superhero by game's end is enormously satisfying as a player, especially if deep customisation is allowed - no matter that the narrative foundation might be one of the most predictable that there ever has been.

Oh, and extra points if the fated protagonist also happens to be an amnesiac.
