11 Video Game Consoles You Never Knew Existed

11. Taito WOWOW

What's crazier - the name of this thing, or the fact the hardware design itself looks almost identical to Sony's re-re-release of the PS3?
Whereas Sony previously based their PS2 design on the Atari's old Falcon system, this time round there doesn't seem to be any evidence of a patent-swap, instead suggesting the stark similarities between the two are purely coincidental. In a case of a hardware manufacturer's grasp exceeding their reach, the WOWOW was going to be one of the first systems to allow for downloadable games via satellite - predating the likes of Xbox Live and Playstation Online by a full decade, but sadly it never got off the ground even after having a tie-in to the Japanese TV station of the same name. Sure the games that were touted as the 'future' were of a smaller filesize than whatever you've probably got assigned as your ringtone, but it's pretty cool to note the idea of digital-distribution started far earlier than you may have realised.
