10 Video Game Crossovers That Went Too Far

2. Fortnite X Junji Ito Is Just Wrong

No list about crossovers is complete without mentioning the gargantuan Fortnite. Where else can you see Aquaman hitting Daryl from The Walking Dead with a kamehameha?

The once humble survival game exploded when it changed gears and became the #1 battle royale game of all time, capitalising on this further with more merchandise than you can possibly imagine and signing a bunch of contracts with other licence holders.

However, it must be said Fortnite knew that its audience of young kids with internet connections meant that nothing was really off limits. John Wick, Kratos and Master Chief might be intended for mature audiences but that fact alone would be interesting to kids with access to their parents’ wallets.

However, a collaboration with legendary Japanese master of horror Junji Ito might be a step beyond.

Five maps are available based on different Ito stories including Hanging Balloon which, by the way, is about children being hung and strangled by balloons with human faces. Just looking at the damn things is enough to make me feel uncomfortable as an adult. Skins are one thing but this is a level of nightmare fuel yet unchartered by the game.

At any point Fornite’s wild array of crossovers could be enough for you. But this one? As a famous Ito piece once said: “This hole is mine”.
