This game doesn't wait for the end to break you.

That Dragon, Cancer is an indie title developed by a small team led by Ryan and Amy Green. The game is based around the real-life cancer diagnosis of their one-year-old child, Joel.

Joel tried to combat the disease, exceeding his life expectancy by four years. The narrative revolves around their experiences as a family, including the initial diagnosis.

Words fall short when finding ways of describing this game due to the heavy content, but with Joel's cancer getting more and more rampant with each passing year (he had developed at least seven additional tumours) and a portion of the game has you discussing end-of-life care, the inevitable seemed in sight.

In many small parts of gameplay, you are simply trying to bring your young son joy, whether it be blowing bubbles or playing with the dog. There's even an interesting platformer section partway through.

Overall it beautifully captures the familial elements, the innocence of children, and just how cruel and unfair the world can be at times, but how we must try our hardest to make the best of everything good.

Rest in peace, Joel.
