Almost two decades after its release, the DLC that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion is best remembered for is the outrageously overpriced horse armour which quickly became a point of mockery within the gaming landscape. However, Bethesda would later release far better expansions for this game, with one of the best being The Shivering Isles.

Released in 2007, the expansion begins with players stepping into a portal which transports them to the realm of Sheogorath, the Deadric Prince of Madness. He’s looking for a champion to stop a catastrophic event, and upon accepting his request players are taken on a grand adventure spanning over 20 hours. The result was a welcome departure from the rest of this classic RPG.

Compared to the rest of Oblivion, The Shivering Isles was a more light-hearted outing which leaned into the sheer madness of its setting to make for a wonderfully madcap experience. The environments were more colourful and fantastical, with a stark contrast between the primary areas of Mania and Dementia.

With this expansion's insanity making for some of the most memorable quests in the game, no playthrough of Oblivion is complete without entering The Shivering Isles.
