As infamous as it is bizarre, there are two methods for unlocking the Dog ending in Silent Hill 2. The player must either have completed the game three times with the Leave, In Water and Maria endings, or finished the game once with the Rebirth ending.

This means players will have explored the strange locations of Silent Hill in detail and become accustomed to its dark horrors, as various truths are brought to light. This is then completely disregarded in the Dog ending, along with the player’s notions that they had a grasp on the true nature of Silent Hill.

After meeting the prior prerequisites, a doghouse will appear near Rosewater Park. Investigating it allows James to obtain the Dog Key, which can be used in the Observation Room.
