5. King Cailhan Wasn't Innocent - Dragon Age: Origins

At first glance, the main villain of Dragon Age: Origins, Loghain, seems like your typical power-hungry tyrant. He lets his king die in the battle against the Darkspawn, then goes on to usurp his throne and persecute your character for no apparent reason whatsoever.

Well, except he actually has quite a few good reasons.

You see, a big part of Loghain’s character is his hatred of Orlais, the country that used to occupy his homeland of Ferelden. His disdain for Orlesians seems to drive him to make irrational decisions, as it is why he refuses to call the Orlesian Grey Wardens for help and why he betrays King Cailan at Ostagar.

When you play the game normally, Loghain’s actions seem to be the result of sheer paranoia, but if you actually bother to read the books and notes spread throughout the world (which, let’s be honest, most people don’t), you actually learn it was all justified.

The notes reveal that Cailan did in fact want to divorce Loghain’s daughter Anora and marry the empress of Orlais, bringing Ferelden back under Orlesian control.

So yeah, although his methods were questionable, had Loghain not left Cailan to die, Ferelden would’ve quickly lost its independence.
