Cult classic survival horror game Soma follows human protagonist Simon Jarrett who wakes up in a remote underwater research facility.

Later, Simon discovers that he is not the original human Simon at all, but in fact a scan of his brain which has been uploaded into a modified corpse by an AI.

The AI, called the Warden Unit, has been creating bio-mechanical human-machine hybrids in this way to try and preserve what remains of humanity following an extinction event on the surface.

Though Simon is ultimately able to send a copy of his brain scan off into space contained within a black box which simulates a utopian environment for it, his current self is left trapped underground at the bottom of the abyss.

To make matters worse, his only form of company, the brain scan of Catherine, is effectively killed after the machine it's placed within short circuits, confining Simon to an eternity of loneliness in the most remote place on Earth.
