The Evil Within is a survival horror experience from genre master Shinji Mikami. As such, it features all the staples fans would expect: lots of sneaking down long, dark hallways, lumpen enemies, a great scarcity of ammo and so forth.

It isn’t the easiest experience at the best of times, but successful competing Sebastian’s adventure once unlocks the nightmare and AKUMU modes.

Nightmare mode cranks up the aggression/health of the enemies and reduces all resources the player receives. It’s one of the most stringent tests of survival horror mastery ever. AKUMU goes a step further by adding a further stipulation: the player will instantly die from any damage.

What’s the reward for completing the game on either of these settings? The Brass Knuckles, a melee weapon that provides a huge boost to Sebastian’s unarmed attacks.

They’re a lot of fun to mess around with… if you ever actually unlock them.
