10 Video Game Film Adaptations In Production Right Now

9. Tomb Raider

Following the recent announcement of Square Enix's plans for a sequel to Tomb Raider's 2013 reboot, it is also noteworthy that a remake of the film series is simultaneously in the works. MGM Studios and Eidos Interactive are developing the film, at present, and have recently hired Marti Noxon to develop the script - a screenwriter best known for her work on Buffy the Vampire Slayer amongst other TV hits. Oscar-winning producer, Graham King, is also tied to the project. The recent game revival acted as a breath of fresh air for the series. Since its humble beginnings, Lara Croft has traversed jungles, mountain ranges and underwater Atlantis' in search of lost artefacts and historical tidbits. Angelina Jolie's attempt at embodying the role of Lara never quite satisfied the critics and fans, though was nonetheless a box office success. Whether the gaming revival offers a new take on a younger Lara, we can certainly expect a more impressive entry than its predecessor - the script is rumoured to be based on the most recent game, which was distinctly more successful. The action/adventure genre is particularly widespread and offers a substantially diverse range of opportunities for adaptation. Even if the film producers were to deviate from the fictional, yet legendary, island of Yamatai, there is a certain safety net granted to the scriptwriters in regard to where they can allow Lara to explore - as an adventurer/archaeologist the possibilities are as endless as the writer's imagination.
