10 Video Game Franchises Ruined By Studio Takeovers
6. Devil May Cry
Yet another franchise that saw itself ruined and then redeemed is that of Devil May Cry, after the semi-famous debacle that was the fourth entry into the series.
While DmC 4 wasn't an abysmal experience, it was developed by Ninja Theory instead of in-house at Capcom, as the rest of the series was. Though it proved a technically well-made and fun game, it didn't mesh entirely well with many long-term fans, who felt the game sort of mocked the franchise they'd come to love.
Anyone who remembers the infamous cut scene where a new Dante has a mop fall on his head to replicate his old white hair and states "not in a million years" knows that this is what the game was going for - just it was likely intended to be an affectionate joke, whereas many took it as a bit of a slap in the face, causing a sort of civil war in the fanbase.
Devil May Cry 5 put worries about the franchise cannibalising itself to bed, but there was still a good few years where it felt as though its fate was very much uncertain - which was sure to be terrifying for those who'd fallen in love with the games in earlier years.
