10 Video Game Franchises That Need To Die
1. Assassin's Creed
Peaking with the release of Assassin's Creed 2, the franchise has been forever marred its name by producing sequels with boring characters, or by being unplayably broken. The impact of the bug-ridden Assassin's Creed: Unity had a noticeable impact on its later instalment, Syndicate, which became the second-worst selling game in the franchise.
The developers of the series clearly recognised this, and scraped together a script for a film to boost the sales of the franchise. But the main problem with Assassin's Creed isn't its story, it's that it's never shown particularly inspiring gameplay.
Although it appeared innovative to begin with, the combat system with its enemies politely attacking one-by-one quickly drew the ridicule of the gaming community. The enemies were so magnificently outclassed that it's simpler to massacre everyone than attempt to sneak past guards with the laughable "stealth" system.
For a series about assassins, the series spends remarkably little time being stealthy, or eliminating enemies in ways other than walking up behind them and insta-killing them. The issue with Assassin's Creed is that it's had years to fix the issues that hampered it, but it opted to churn out sequel after sequel, carrying on in the face of increasingly vocal critics.
Assassin's Creed could have been improved so many times if it took just another year to release a game, but it never made that decision, instead continuing to try for easy money.
After this issue came to a head in Unity, it's unlikely that the series will never truly recover.
