Okay, there's no way you can discuss consistent game franchises without bringing up Nintendo's moustachioed mascot.

In fact, Super Mario might be the first consistent gaming property ever.

The suspiciously nimble plumber should be championed, not just for his stability over the years, but his ability to repeatedly revolutionise the industry. Super Mario Bros. popularised 2D side-scrollers. Super Mario 64 showcased 3D platformers were the way of the future. Super Mario Kart proved spin-offs didn't have to be cash-grabs, and could be just as good as the game they spawned from.

Although Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Sunshine are regarded as the "bad entries," nothing could be further from the truth. They may be the nadir of the series, but Super Mario Bros. 2 and Super Mario Sunshine are still solid games in their own right. The fact that great titles like these two are considered "the weak Mario games" just goes to show how highly the franchise is regarded.

We're not sure when the next official Mario sequel will be released, but it'll certainly be it'll be a hit.
