10 Video Game Glitches That Made Saving DELETE Your Progress Instead

6. Wiegraf Duel - Final Fantasy Tactics

Final Fantasy Tactics is a more strategic take on the franchise’s jRPG formula, implementing a Fire Emblem-style battle map.

Being a more tactical Final Fantasy title, the game obviously expects you to prepare for each battle, but what you may not know is that in one instance, it can even punish you for being ill-prepared by permanently ruining your save file.

The boss fight with Wiegraf is infamous among Tactics players for destroying many a playthrough thanks to its ability to softlock the player in an unwinnable fight.

The game asks you to save right before the duel, but what it doesn’t mention is that the fight is so difficult that without grinding your characters’ levels and preparing your inventory, it can become impossible to win.

The prompt to save appears before the duel to give you an easy way to repeat it should you lose, but if you unintentionally use it while your characters are severely ill-prepared, you will create a save with an unwinnable encounter, forcing yourself into deleting it and starting a new playthrough.

It’s not a proper bug, but the prompt is a result of poor foresight on the developers part who didn’t realize some people might try to rush their bosses.
