The first Borderlands ends with the Vault Hunter and their party battling the gigantic bullet sponge boss known as the Destroyer, before the sequel reveals that the Destroyer's defeat caused the valuable mineral Eridium to start materialising in the crust of the planet Pandora.

This in turn causes the president of the Hyperion Corporation, Handsome Jack, to start mining all the available Eridium under the guise of making Pandora a better place, yet ultimately it just facilitates his transformation into an unrepentant corporate tyrant.

Jack's greed-fuelled quest ensures the average Pandora resident is much worse off under his rule, with withering economic prospects and any vocal dissenters promptly being sent to their grave, all while the planet's resources are tirelessly plundered.

And it's really all thanks to the Vault Hunter and his pals, for inadvertently triggering the discovery of Eridium at the end of the first game and basically teeing up Handsome Jack's rise to near-unstoppable power.
