Fallout 2 is full of hidden little details that the game never explains to you. Most of them are easter eggs or small quality of life features, but in the case of meat jerky, the secret can be the difference between life and death.

Most players know the in-game meat jerky as a less than mediocre healing item. For this reason, they tend to ignore it, although it has a second, much better use.

When dropped on the ground, the meat can be used to distract hostile geckos, allowing you to slip past them unnoticed. The hungry mutants will immediately move towards the meat, and you will be able to leave unharmed.

Given the meat jerky is a pretty cheap and common item, keeping a handful of it in your inventory can be a real life saver early in the game, when every encounter is possibly deadly.

If you want to, you can even use it to cheese the game a little by distracting the geckos and giving yourself more time to position yourself better for combat.

Either way, using it as bait is way better than eating it, so you might as well share with someone who appreciates its subtly chewy and crunchy texture.
