10 Video Game Mechanics That Make No Sense

7. Finishing Moves

Mortal Kombat It goes without saying that finishing moves are totally badass; they're an awesome way to give your opponent a satisfying final smackdown, but when you think about it, do they really make sense? One has to consider - if these people are capable of performing such grotesque feats of violence, why don't they just do that from the outset? While it's clear that the mechanics of a fight are building to a climax - and the "fatalities" from Mortal Kombat are an obvious way to give players more satisfying victories - why wouldn't the character just perform that move at the start? Alright, there's probably some sort of shoehorned explanation that the characters have to muster up the energy/power/whatever to be able to perform such a violent feat, but few games actually go out of their way to explain this mechanic - they just expect us to buy it!
