10 Video Game Mistakes (That Were Totally Intentional)

6. Wavedashing - Super Smash Bros. Melee

Despite its generally glowing reception from fans and critics alike, Super Smash Bros. Melee was nevertheless somewhat controversial in the fighting game community due to the introduction of a "mechanic" which many initially believed to be a bug or exploit - wavedashing.

Wavedashing is a technique executed by air dodging diagonally into the ground, causing the player's character to slide a short distance along the ground.

Basically, it gives players a huge tactical advantage, allowing them to have a much greater degree of control over their movements, attacks, and shielding during combat.

Many felt that Nintendo didn't intend for players to find and utilise wavedashing, but in an interview with Nintendo Power, director Masahiro Sakurai confirmed the mechanic was indeed something his team discovered during the development period and actively decided to keep in the final game.

It was ultimately removed from sequel Super Smash Bros. Brawl in an attempt to close the skill gap between advanced and casual players, though did return for the most recent entry into the series, Super Smash Bros. Ultimate
