But the shock comes when we discover that Conrad is long dead. . The stress of the incident has broken him, using an imaginary Konrad as a way of dealing with the tragedy that unfolded.

It was a gut wrenching twist, as you realise that your teammates were right, doing their best to stop their captain from descending into madness further. For added effect, you'll notice the loading screens goad you for your poor decisions too.

It was rare to see such a powerful narrative in an otherwise standard shooter, which still hasn't been topped today.
