10 Video Game Moments We Were Waiting for (That Never Happened)

"The killer's identity turns out to be... actually... it doesn't matter."

Video games often build anticipation for certain events, characters, or plotlines. When these moments are hinted at, players should have a decent idea where they're going.

If a villain supposedly dies off-screen, they're sure to return before the end. When you see a huge enemy in the background, it's only a matter of time before you face off with it. If the antagonist's identity is unknown, it would be crazy to end the story without a jaw-dropping reveal.

If these teases are done correctly, the pay-off can be deeply satisfying. After all, the reason why Knights of the Old Republic's twist works so well is because there were so many subtle clues prior to the big reveal.

However, some games go in the opposite direction, eluding to an upcoming boss battle, conflict, or revelation that never comes to fruition. This is can be frustrating, especially when the moment in question is repeatedly hinted at.

On the other hand, these moments can be rewarding since it can blindside players who thought they knew exactly how everything was going to play out.

Although these ten games have plenty to offer, they didn't offer what we thought.

10. Ganon Is Behind It All - The Legend Of Zelda: Echoes Of Wisdom

Save for the godawful Philip CD-i games, Princess Zelda hasn't served as the protagonist of a Legend of Zelda entry, despite the fact her name is slapped on every title.

However, all that changed with The Legend of Zelda: Echoes of Wisdom. In the opening, Link defeats his pig-headed nemesis, Ganon, seemingly saving Hyrule for the umpteenth time.

Before he has a moment to celebrate, the tunic-wearing warrior is sucked into a black void. With Hyrule's go-to hero out of commission, it's up to Zelda to protect the kingdom from the forces of evil.

Naturally, all signs are pointing to Ganon being behind the latest calamity. After all, he's the most recurring villain in the franchise, his ugly mug is on the front cover, and you literally saw him in the prologue.

But Ganon isn't the final boss. In fact, he doesn't appear in Echoes of Wisdom at all. At the halfway point, it's revealed this "Ganon" is an imposter created by primordial evil called Null, who serves as the true antagonist.

Although some players half-expected the iconic Zelda evildoer to pop up later, the real Ganon never makes an appearance. (He was probably on holiday.)
