7. Facing Venat - Final Fantasy XII

Doom Eternal
Square Enix

Final Fantasy XII follows a young adventurer called Vaan who allies with sky pirates to take down the diabolical king, Vayne. Of course, this is Final Fantasy we're talking about, so it's only a matter of time before the straightforward story turns into a convoluted cosmic saga between good and evil.

Sure enough, Vaan eventually learns Vayne is being controlled by an ancient entity called Venat, who intends to shape the world in his own image.

Now, puppet masters are a recurring element in Final Fantasy that dates back to the original. More often than not, each entry concludes with the supposed antagonist being discarded in the eleventh hour, only for the heroes to fight the one pulling the stings. With FFXII continuing this tradition, it was assumed Venat would dispose of his pawn during the climax, choosing to challenge Vaan's party himself.

But things don't play out this way. Prior to the final battle, Venat endows Vayne with his power, turning him into a god-like being called The Undying. When he ironically dies, you assume (again) this confrontation was merely the preamble for the real showdown against Venat.

Instead, defeating The Undying destroys Venat, freeing the world from his tyranny. It's nice to know you saved the world, but players were really hoping to face off against the mercurial deity directly.
