10 Video Game Moments You'll Never See Again

6. Chris Redfield’s Temporary Face - Resident Evil 7

Oh, maybe companies do make big changes and then walk them back.

Resident Evil 7, for all of the compliments that can be paid to its atmosphere and bold choices to change perspective, doesn’t get enough praise for its visual design. Using photogrammetry to meticulously scan objects, it gave the Baker Estate a very grounded feeling. Capcom, proud of the technology, also used it for the game’s cast.

In the game’s closing moments the protagonist is saved by a man who unmasks and offers his hand. Introducing himself as Redfield, most fans had the same reaction: “no you’re not”.

The Resident Evil community was up-in-arms about the face change to the long-serving Chris Redfield, even going so far as to theorise that it was all a ruse. After all, Chris had been fairly consistent in design for the last decade and it was a very sudden shakeup.

Of course, when the next instalment rolled around Capcom put their brave decision behind them and in Resident Evil Village Chris resembles at least a halfway house between the two.

RE7’s Imposter-Chris does appear as an unlockable skin in the series’ undercooked multiplayer spin-off RE:Verse but it’s a sure thing that this face remains a hilarious memory and never gets a starring role again.
