10 Video Game Plot Twists That Punished Loyal Fans

6. Ending On A Cliffhanger - Halo 2 & 5

Halo 2 ending
Bungie

The twist so nice, they did it twice.

Oh, was that 'nice'? I meant 'roundly despised by the community to the degree that no one ever talks about Halo 2 without mentioning it'. Much better.

Perhaps you weren't there at the time (and being Halo is 13 years old, there's every chance some tween is reading this with no knowledge of the Chief's efforts), know that despite spending its final third ramping up to a big ol' explosive-filled climax, Halo 2 has the Chief state he's going to "Finish this fight", only for the credits to pop up.

Oh.

Halo 5 Cortana
Microsoft

The reality was production related as Bungie were forced to ship too early, bolting the necessary canon back onto Halo 3 for the big finish.

However, that doesn't explain 343 Industries' dropping the sticky grenades, because even though Halo 5's marketing was all about Master Chief vs. Spartan Locke and its twist revolved around Cortana being the villain, she's barely finished uttering a sentence as to why, before once again those damn credits come barrelling in.

"Tune in next time for... the answer to the question of why you were playing!"

Marketing genius.
