10 Video Game Protagonists Who Were Way Too Satisfying To Kill

2. Lara Croft - Tomb Raider

Perhaps no video game protagonist has been as famously suicidal as Lara Croft: one of the great thrills of the series right from the beginning has been in seeing how many ways Lara can die. Her near-orgasmic death noise certainly incentivised death, be it by leaping from a great height and breaking every bone in her body, or landing in a spike pit, or being eaten by a T-Rex. Core Design quickly became aware of how much players enjoyed killing Lara and even included a cheat in Tomb Raider 2 which would make Lara spontaneously explode. By the time the 2013 reboot rolled around, it appeared as though the Lara Croft character was going to be taken in a more believable, gritty direction, but Crystal Dynamics were smart enough to still include a large number of grim death sequences for the character. Some of the more memorable ones include being crushed to death by a rock (accompanied by a genuinely disturbing, blood-curdling scream), being devoured by wolves, and being impaled through the torso or head by a metal pole while careening down a river (as pictured above). And yes, falling to your death still includes a ridiculous scream, even if it's not quite as sexy as it was in previous games. Crystal Dynamics said that they wanted to make Lara more vulnerable so that players would care about protecting her, but that didn't really stop us wanting to see all of the imaginative ways in which she could meet her end.
