Originally released in Japan in 2006 before the remake introduced the game to the west in 2012, La-Mulana is a challenging adventure outing inspired by classic Metroidvanias. In it, players take on the role of archaeologist Lemeza Kosugi as he explores the titular ruins in search of ancient treasures.

Alongside facing perilous traps and dangerous enemies, players will likewise need to solve various puzzles to progress deeper into the game.

While there are plenty of difficult challenges in this game, the most perplexing is the mantras puzzle which players will need to complete to reach the final boss. This riddle involves finding eight mantras and chanting them in order at specific spots. However, finding these exact locations isn't made clear.

The best method for finding where to perform these chants comes from the game's manual, which suggests each level should be plotted as a map of four-by-five squares for both its front and back sides. Starting from the compass room, players need to trace the directions to get to the boss room on the front side and then retrace this same path on the back to pinpoint the correct location.

As far as obtuse game puzzles go, this is one of the worst.
