3. Tomb Raider (2013)
With a series that's been going for as long as Tomb Raider has, it's not surprising that Lara Croft has seen numerous different incarnations over the years. From the gritty but unsuccessful Angel of Darkness to 2007's lifeline Legend, the franchise has been re-imagined over and over again, but sadly, never to the extent that many fans had been hoping for. That was until the 2013 total reboot anyway. Moving away from the classic gameplay that was so identifiable to the property and recasting Lara as a younger, more vulnerable protagonist provided a breath of fresh air for this failing and stuck-in-its-ways series. A far cry from the family-friendly adventures that defined much of the earlier games, this reimagining of the Tomb Raider world was more influenced by horror movies and survival films than it was high-flying, Indiana Jones style action. It still boasted the fantastical side that players had come to know and love, but the rest of the game was completely different to anything fans had seen before.
