10 Video Game Reboots You Didn't Know Were Happening
3. Painkiller
Remember Painkiller? This first-person shooter from future Bulletstorm devs People Can Fly revolved around a dead man blasting his way through Lucifer's forces in Purgatory in order to gain entry to Heaven.
Both the single-player campaign and multiplayer were well-received back in 2004, even if Painkiller flew somewhat under the radar compared to the marquee FPS titles of the era.
But this past March, it was announced that Anshar Studios - primarily known as a support studio on games like Baldur's Gate 3 and Silent Hill 2 - was working on a franchise reboot.
The reveal trailer certainly convinces that the new Painkiller will retain the face-melting, mile-a-minute action and gorgeous art direction of its predecessor, but there are a few notable gameplay shake-ups.
For one, the reboot includes a co-op campaign with support for up to three players, and players will now be able to choose between four characters, each of whom have their own distinct perks and buffs.
It'll certainly be interesting to see if a shooter as niche as Painkiller can land with the gamers of today, but we don't have long to find out as it launches on October 9.
