10 Video Game Reboots You Didn't Know Were Happening

These sneaky video game reboots are on the way.

While it's often said that there are far too many remakes and remasters in the modern gaming era, reboots are a whole different kettle of fish.

Rather than simply raking back over what worked before with a new lick of paint, franchise reboots can take a beloved but long-in-the-tooth IP and inject it with a fresh batch of ideas alongside a visual update.

Great reboots can entirely rejuvenate interest in a flagging franchise, and while they're hard to pull off - in terms of satisfying old-school fans while winning over new ones - when they work, they tend to really work.

But there are so many damn games being announced and released every single week that you couldn't be blamed for failing to clock these upcoming reboots.

Each has flown somewhat under the radar since being unveiled, no matter that each has the potential to bring a dusty gaming franchise back into major prominence.

We'll just have to wait and see how it all shakes out, and some of these games are probably still a few years off, but here's hoping they live up to the brilliance of the storied original...

10. Golden Axe

Golden Axe is a classic side-scrolling fantasy-themed beat 'em up series, yet despite the popularity of the original 1989 game, its follow-ups never quite recaptured the same glory.

Golden Axe II was criticised for being too similar to the original, Golden Axe III wasn't even released outside of Japan, and a number of naff spin-offs only further diluted the perception of the brand.

The last entry was 2008's largely-panned 3D outing Golden Axe: Beast Rider, and while few were expecting Golden Axe to ever be revived, at the 2023 Game Awards Sega announced that a reboot was in fact in the works.

The few brief seconds of gameplay shown so far have confirmed it to be a 3D reimagining that will feature redesigned versions of original heroes Ax Battler, Tyris Flare, and Gilius Thunderhead.

Precious little else has been unveiled about the game to date, though it'd be shocking if the new Golden Axe didn't at least have online multiplayer functionality.
