10 Video Game Remakes NO ONE Asked For
9. The House Of The Dead Remake
House of the Dead stood out amongst other light-gun titles during the late '90s (and it wasn't just because of its gore). Sega's creepy FPS was praised for focusing on destructible environments, saving survivors, and targeting enemies' weak points. HOTD also had a ton of replayability thanks to the various branching paths.
So, when MegaPixel Studio announced a remake was coming in 2022, there were concerns how modern consoles would accommodate the gameplay without light-guns.
The answer was - badly. Simply put, the zombie rail-shooter doesn't work with analog sticks or buttons. Although there are multiple control options, they proved to be wonky, overly sensitive, or imprecise. In situations like this, it feels like technology is regressing since modern consoles can't accommodate a 25-year-old shooter's set-up, when gaming systems from the '90s had no such issue.
Also, one integral part of the original was how you had to fire away from the screen to reload, leaving yourself momentarily vulnerable. Unfortunately, the tension in the remake is heavily diminished since you can reload with the press of a button. The brainless flesh-eaters have never looked better but HOTD isn't the same without the traditional control system.
Even if the controls were cleaned-up, the 2022 version wouldn't entertain players for long, since it's insultingly lacking in content. There are a few additional modes, but nothing to write home about.
In hindsight, it would've been better if the 1997 version was re-released with a peripheral that could substitute for a light gun.
