10 Video Game Remakes NO ONE Expected
7. Resident Evil 2
After the success of Resident Evil Remake in 2002, Capcom strongly considered giving the sequel the same treatment.
But since Resident Evil 4 was undergoing an apocalyptic production, it was decided to focus all attention on that project.
After RE4 was hailed as a masterpiece, Capcom thought it was in their best interest to pump out new entries, rather than retreading previous instalments. And because the undead saga had gradually moved away from survival horror, it was uncertain if a revision of the earlier entries would have the same impact as before.
However, all that changed with Resident Evil 6. Due to unresponsive controls, erratic AI and bloated action, this clunker was regarded as an unmitigated disaster.
Although Resident Evil 2 creator, Hideki Kamiya, pushed for a remake for years, the ball only got rolling after RE6 bombed. When Resident Evil VII was applauded for returning to its horror roots, Capcom knew redoing the second instalment was the right move.
REVII may have helped the series get back on track, but RE2 Remake deserves immense praise, perfectly recreating the terror and tension of the original, whilst feeling fresh and new.
