10 Video Game Review Scores Fans Lost Their MINDS Over
1. Metal Gear Solid V Gets A 93 Metascore Despite Releasing Unfinished
It wasn't exactly a shocker when Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain released to rave reviews given the series' impressive consistency to this point, with the 93 Metascore suggesting that Hideo Kojima had delivered yet another stealth-action masterpiece.
All was well until fans got hands-on with the game themselves, and in the days that followed it became apparent that something was fishy with MGS V's development.
That is to say, despite its first-rate gameplay, the story ends in incredibly abrupt fashion, and it overall feels like the game was released before it was done cooking.
This was basically confirmed less than two weeks after release when players discovered game data referring to a cut third chapter, while the Collector's Edition of the game also included footage of a cut mission which would've tied numerous ambiguous narrative threads off.
And so, with this in mind, fans questioned why critics were so effusive in their praise despite the game's wildly lackluster finale.
Was it simply that critics were more "objective" in their analysis and felt that the journey was more important than the destination, or that Konami's heavily restricted review process - with many outlets reviewing it in time-limited "boot camps" - prevented some from even reaching the end before the embargo lifted?
Either way, many cried foul that an "incomplete" game could receive so many gushing raves, no matter how expertly crafted the core gameplay loop indeed was.
