Ever since the original Pokémon games were released in 1996, every child has wished for the ability to pet their Pokémon. It took Game Freak seventeen years to finally introduce this feature to the franchise with the release of Pokémon X and Y. However, perhaps to make it more appealing to those who were no longer kids after nearly two decades of waiting, the developers decided to give it a little extra spice.

Along with the ability to pet your Pokémon came a special stat called "affection" that could be leveled up by it. Each level of affection would provide your Pokémon with progressively better perks. At lower levels, it was a simple buff to the creature's experience gain, but later down the road, the Pokémon could learn how to dodge incoming attacks and double its critical hit chance.

Your Pokémon was able to gain an insane advantage on the battlefield with just a little grooming, even against the toughest of opponents. And to top it all off, the petting mechanic was also capable of curing all Pokémon of bad status conditions.

See? There really was a point to spending hours headpatting your virtual pet with your 3DS stylus.
