10 Video Game Sequel Baits That Went Nowhere

8. A World Of Chaos - DmC: Devil May Cry

Resident Evil 2 Umbrella
Capcom

In the early 2010s, Capcom was in a weird place. In order to appeal to a wider demographic, they decided that their demon-slaying action series Devil May Cry and its leading man Dante should start afresh.

However, they banked too hard on its success.

The entire ending of DmC is one gigantic sequel hook. Dante commits to defending humanity from evil, Virgil goes MIA and Limbo merges with the real world - revealing to humankind the existence of demons and allowing full blown chaos to begin.

Of course, Devil May Cry fans weren’t all that bothered by the cliffhanger, nor the game’s story at large and even overlooked the entire gameplay loop. The conversation leading up to and on release was the broad character design changes, swapping out Dante’s iconic look for that of a generic edgelord teenager who even went as far as to mock the previous design.

Players were so incensed by this that Capcom, understandably, pulled back entirely from the reboot to save face. The next game in the series was DMC V, continuing the established story. As such, DmC’s reboot will likely always end at an abrupt stop.

And for a great number of fans, that’s the way they’d probably like it to stay.
