The Norse reboot for God of War has not just rejuvenated the game’s style and combat but also created a deep world, rife for theories and speculation.

In the game, a horn atop the bridge over the Lake of Nine can be blown into to call the attention of the World Serpent; an ancient giant that speaks a long dead language that only Kratos’ pal Mimir can actually converse in. As such, later into the game when Kratos’ son Atreus falls ill, players were confused about the sound of the horn being blown in the distance.

It was one of the most discussed unanswered questions from the title and so anticipation was high that its sequel, Ragnarök, would finally provide the truth… which it absolutely did not.

There is a scene in the follow-up where Kratos blows the Gjallarhorn and some fans speculate that it might be powerful enough to ripple across time but director Cory Barlog tweeted that that absolutely wasn’t the case.

He has maintained that he’ll reveal the truth one day so it’s not like it’s been totally forgotten about but considering that Ragnarök marks the end of the franchise’s Norse era it seems like the time for the answer has already passed.
