Rocksteady’s Arkham games became a phenomenon, and rightly so. At the time of Batman: Arkham Asylum’s launch in 2009, superhero games and licensed titles had a terrible rap. The likes of Superman 64 had turned many gamers off of the whole concept for life. Was it possible for a game to truly make us feel like we actually were the superhero in question? Yes, it was, as Arkham Asylum would prove.

As the series went on, the game world expanded, more fan-favorite characters were introduced and Batman fan nirvana just kept getting better. Even so, the titles weren’t flawless (which is impossible, after all) and there were certain elements that fans would have to wait to get their hands on.

The first two titles, Arkham Asylum and Batman: Arkham City, were set within the titular small (relatively) areas of the iconic Gotham City. What fans wanted to do, however, was be free to explore the city itself (a la Spider-Man in New York City), which they would first be able to do as a less-experienced, more youthful Batman in prequel Batman: Arkham Origins.

Next on the checklist was the opportunity to drive the Batmobile through said city. Bruce Wayne’s beloved vehicle was finally added with Batman: Arkham Knight in 2015, though all the hype around its addition was ultimately reflected in its excessive use.
