10 Video Game Sequels That Surpassed The Original In Every Way
1. Pokemon: Gold & Silver
When Pokemon: Red & Blue launched in 1996, they took the world by storm, and the Pokemon franchise remains an absolute phenomenon to this very day.
However, the sequel pair of games, Gold & Silver, truly are the crown jewels of this media juggernaut's formative years. When Gamefreak returned to give their ultimate success another go-round, they brought their A-game and so much more.
Pokemon: Gold & Silver provided players with a brand new, larger world to explore in the form of the Johto region, more Pokemon to see and capture, and a far better and more balanced combat system, complete with an experience bar, which Red & Blue lacked.
In addition, Gold & Silver introduced the breeding system to Pokemon, as well as brought shiny Pokemon into the fold, a move that would keep the dedicated hunters of these illusive creatures busy for years to come.
The icing on the cake, of course, is getting to explore the original Kanto region from Red & Blue once your journey in Johto is complete, fighting your way through the original gyms which are now significantly tougher. The entirety of Red & Blue's gameplay is essentially available in Gold & Silver, culminating with you taking on the original protagonist on top of a snowy mountain in an epic final battle.
If that's not the way to do a sequel, I don't know what is.
