10 Video Game Sequels That Turned Wimps Into Total Badasses

8. Princess Zelda - The Legend Of Zelda: Ocarina Of Time

It's fair to say that Princess Zelda is best known for being a prototypical Nintendo damsel-in-distress, who must be saved by Link in every single Legend of Zelda game while having virtually no agency of her own.

More a prize for the player and less of an actual character in her own right, early iterations of Zelda seem embarrassingly retrograde when played today.

That changed with the release of the legendary Ocarina Of Time, however, which introduced players to an extremely cool new character called Sheik, a shadowy figure who covered "his" face while periodically dropping in to give Link assistance.

Eventually, Sheik reveals that he is in fact Zelda in disguise, offering up a welcome spin on the series' formula and ensuring that Zelda wasn't just listlessly waiting around to be rescued.

Subsequent games have largely failed to capitalise on the potential hinted at here, sadly, though the first trailer for the upcoming Breath of the Wild follow-up seems to hint strongly at a playable Zelda and possibly even a co-op mode. Fingers and toes crossed.
