10 Video Game Sequels That Went Super Dark
7. The Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask
The Legend of Zelda series is one of the most iconic, influential and acclaimed game series of all time and one of it's entries, Ocarina of Time, remains the highest rated game of all time among critics with an almost perfect Metacritic score of 99.
Somewhat unusually for the series, which usually features standalone games, Majora's Mask released in the year 2000 as a direct sequel to Ocarina of Time and was a complete tonal shift from the previous title.
Set two months after Ocarina of Time, you play as Link once again who discovers that the moon will crash into the world and bring about the apocalypse in three days.
The horrifying and ominous moon that is slowly descending towards the world filled us with a sense of dread and impending doom that was never present in the previous Legend of Zelda titles, despite those games featuring some scary enemies and areas. Majora's Mask also features creepier non-player character and enemy designs, dank dungeons and deeper themes alongside the constant threat of the lunar apocalypse.
With themes of death, loss and grief, it remains the most emotionally complex entry in the long running game series.
