Did you know there have been 4 games in the Disaster Report series? No? Well, that’s because there almost wasn’t. Originally released as Zettai Zetsumei Toshi, the Desperate City, in 2002 with further releases in 2006 and 2009.

The fourth game in the series was schedule to release on Playstation 3 in 2011, however after the Tohoku Earthquake, and ensuing tsunami, developers Irem decided it would be in poor taste to continue the game. That is until 2014 when the IP was purchased by Granzella, a developer newly founded by one of the producers of the original series.

Granzella wound up releasing the fourth game in the series to incredibly middling/terrible reviews on the Playstation 4 in 2018. By the end of 2020 Granzella published a teaser showcasing that they were working on a fifth game in the series. News was fairly slim until May of this year, when Granzella announced some details about the game.

Like the first entry - DR5 is a prequel, taking place between the first and second game. So it's both a sequel and a prequel! It is planned as an open-world title and will have several recurring characters from other games, including the protagonist of the first game - though he’s not slated to be the star.

Here’s hoping when it finally comes out, likely in 2024, that it will get a better than rating than the 2/5 stars the last one did.
