9. Legend Of Zelda: Majora’s Mask – Collecting Every Mask

Ocarina Of Time may have reinvented the Legend of Zelda franchise but spending five years in development, Nintendo weren’t keen for a repeat. Deciding to re-use Ocarina’s game engine, Majora’s Mask arrived in more timely fashion on N64 back in 2000

Seeing Link arrive in Termina, an alternative world that runs parallel to Hyrule, it brought in a range of new gameplay mechanics such as the three day system and greatly expanded upon Ocarina’s mask system.

Using three transformational masks, Link could become a Goron, Deku and Zora to creative effect, but there’s a further twenty of them to collect. These additional masks lacked those powers but still had their purposes and upon reaching the ending, you discover why.

Link can give them all to the Moon Children, who will provide the Fierce Deity Mask in exchange. This mask was only usable in boss fights but it made Link much more powerful, implied to be as dangerous as the Majora’s Mask.

Fairy companion Tatl confirms it holds a dark power, containing the memories of Termina’s people and the manga adaptation alludes to a powerful spirit sealed within that many have theorised to be an ancient enemy of Majora.

Hyrule Historia confirms the Fierce Deity mask’s use as canon, referencing a strange battle that unfolds before Link defeats Majora. It brings some interesting implications, to the wider series story, showing what lengths Link would go to to free Termina.
