10 Video Game Spin-Offs That Surpass The Original
2. Persona (Shin Megami Tensei)
Most of the Western world was oblivious Persona was a a spin-off for years, since it was the first instalment in the Shin Megami Tensei saga available outside of Japan. Although the original series has since been released worldwide, the wacky and hyperstylised offshoot proved more popular.
Though Persona is a turn-based title like its predecessor, it combines other elements including dungeon-crawling, social simulations, and a visual novel-styled story. The combat is less technical, making the battles more accessible and diverse. Social connections are crucial to boosting stats and unlocking powers, making every aspect of the gaming personal (hence the title).
Although Persona started off as a great spin-off, Persona 5 singlehandedly transformed it into a gold-standard franchise. The gorgeous art direction, Shoji Meguero's composition, the thought-provoking narrative, and the flawless fighting mechanics presented a riveting experience that Shin Megami Tensei never managed. Persona 5 was such a hit, it spawned three sidequels (with one more on the way).
Even though Shin Megami Tensei is still going strong, Persona has proven to be, not just one of the best spin-offs, but among the best RPGs ever.
