10 Video Game Tropes We're Sick Of

1. Narrative-Induced Ability Loss

You've spent hours mastering a game, spending your XP to suit your play style, and finding the gear that perfectly compliments it. Enemies might still present a challenge, but you can confidently handle them. Sure would be a shame if someone took all that away...

And they do. The mechanic is usually just an excuse for the game's developer to insert a stealth section, culminating in you finding your gear. Other times, you're stripped of your goodies when faced with a boss battle, upon completion of which your inventory is conveniently restored.

Watching or reading about a character being humbled during their journey allows us to empathise with them from afar. But when you find yourself in a similar situation after clawing your way up from the dirt, it stings. The narrative decision to pull the rug out from under you is a smack in the face in a medium in which the goal is to win.
