In case the foreboding music and sinister voice left you in any doubt, Saren murdering his fellow Spectre before activating a mysterious Beacon and fleeing in his enormous ship should be enough to cement him as the primary antagonist of Mass Effect. With approval from the Council to apprehend him, a cat and mouse chase begins across the Milky Way.

Unfortunately, after catching up with him, it turns out things aren't quite so simple. The ship Saren is flying is actually a sentient monster called Sovereign, tasked with activating a Mass Relay that will invite his fellow Reapers into the galaxy so they can wipe our and harvest all intelligent life.

While acting partially under the influence of indoctrination, Saren is still in possession of some of his own mind.

He is a reluctant betrayer, so overwhelmed by the threat of the Reapers that he cannot see any way the races of the Milky Way can defeat the invaders.

Instead, by siding with them, he hoped to at least save some of each of the races, so their species and histories might not be forgotten altogether.
