10 Video Game Villains With Wasted Potential

2. Thanos - Marvel’s Guardians Of The Galaxy: The Telltale Series

After his breakout success in Avengers: Infinity War, it’s hard not to think that Thanos could be thought of in the collective consciousness as the big bad of the Marvel universe for a long time to come.

And of course he should be: he literally wiped out half the planet and made billions of dollars for Disney doing so.

The MCU’s impact on film is one thing but across all kinds of media superheroes are now just an expected part. Of course the success of the movies spawned video games, including Telltale’s take on The Guardians of the Galaxy. Including Thanos in the title, as the man himself might say, was “inevitable”.

Killing him off in the first 25 minutes of the first episode… not so much.

This was probably meant as a cheeky act of subversion but comes off as cheap. The marketing for the game was heavy on the idea of the Guardians versus Thanos, with the game’s trailer starting with a distress signal and ending with Thanos imposingly demanding the Guardians to show him “how they die”. The game even tells you, in traditional Telltale fashion, that Thanos “will remember that” before he bites it.

Well, he’ll have plenty of time to think about it in the comic book afterlife I guess.
