10 Video Game Weapons That Cost Players Everything

5. The Zodiac Spear - Final Fantasy XII

Well, this just had to be here. The Zodiac Spear is the strongest weapon in the original version of the game but it is nigh on impossible to obtain without a guide or walkthrough for the player to follow. Even the smallest of actions in the early part of the game can utterly ruin any chance of securing the Zodiac Spear - opening an unassuming, unmarked chest is guaranteed to scupper your chances but which ones are they?

To be specific, four chests must be left untouched to obtain the Zodiac Spear and none of them are in any way remarkable or clearly labelled 'DO NOT TOUCH' and do not contain anything the player would really want, just generic inventory items. Total lose-lose situation.

There's no doubting that the sales of official strategy guides skyrocketed as soon as the first players figured the riddle out but spending hard earned cash on a guide isn't something anyone wants to do or wants to admit to having done at any time - FFXII screwed us all good and proper.

Thankfully, the Zodiac Spear was much, MUCH easier to obtain in later version releases but lost its title as the strongest weapon in the game so... what's the point in looking for it? Further lose-lose.
