2. Silent Hill 2 Remake

It cannot be understated just how much ire was directed at the recent remake of Silent Hill 2, because from the moment Bloober Team were announced to be developing it, there was intense skepticism that it'd deliver on expectations.

And in fairness, given Bloober's rather uneven track record in the genre, there was good reason to doubt their ability to deliver a remake worthy of the iconic original.

It didn't help that the reveal trailer left fans divided on the new character designs, and subsequent gameplay footage was criticised for its clunky-looking combat.

With Silent Hill fans having been deprived of a quality entry into the franchise for years by this point, it was easy to appreciate why their hackles were up as the remake's release date approached, fully convinced that it'd be OK-at-best.

But mercifully, the new Silent Hill 2 debuted to strong reviews, with the consensus being that it recaptured the incredible atmosphere of the original game while also expanding it in meaningful ways.

Against the odds, it's by far Bloober's best-reviewed game to date, and one hell of a pleasant surprise after two years of almost unrelenting negativity.
