10 Video Games People HATED (Until They Didn't)
4. Max Payne 3
If you look anyone on the internet now about Max Payne 3, you'll see cries of 'so underrated!' and 'one of the best games I've played!', but when it first came out, people really didn't think that way.
Part of the backlash towards Max Payne's 3rd adventure came because it was a very different game from the first two. This is primarily because development was shifted over to Rockstar, whereas the first two titles were handled by Remedy.
Gone was the gritty environments of New York City and the comic-book-esque presentation we all knew and loved (at least in marketing). It was replaced by an older, balder and grittier Max in the sunny streets of Sao Paulo, wearing a notably un-Max Payne Hawaiian shirt. People didn't take it very well, and for a Rockstar game, sales were only fair to middling, whereas they normally sell by the millions.
In the years that followed, however, Max Payne 3 has been entirely re-appreciated, with a resurgence in popularity. People experiencing it for the first time who skipped over at launch have far more positive things to say, as do Max Payne fans overall. As a result of this growth in overall positivity, Max Payne 3 was finally included in Xbox's latest round of backward compatible titles on the latest hardware.
