10 Video Games Sequels That Were EXACTLY The Same

Dark Souls, also known as "You Died: The Game," has carved out its own unique niche among gaming culture. A punishing experience to say the least, the games are famous for their dodge-based combat, brutal boss fights, and unforgiving death system. And that's... pretty much it, actually. The games have some creative level and character designs, but their story is more nonsensical than even the most insane JRPGs and following it takes the fun away from the gameplay.

As a result, there's barely any difference between Dark Souls and its immediate sequel. Both have a dark, high fantasy atmosphere and they share lighting and shadow designs. Even their environments, while not identical, are so similar that anyone who isn't a hardcore fan of the series who says "git gud" unironically wouldn't be able to tell the two games apart.

This isn't a criticism, far from it. If the gameplay alone is good enough to reinvent the very concept of a hack-n-slash RPG, then don't mess with a winning formula. But it couldn't hurt the exhausted virtuosos over at From Software to maybe be a bit more diverse with their environment layout for the inevitable Dark Souls 4, if for no other reason than to make it a bright novelty among its darker predecessors.
